Smarter Hobart Challenge: Bus Shelter & Digital Interface Design | TAS

City of Hobart Connected City

The project is an exemplary example using Integrated Digital Interface Design to deliver an innovative and visionary approach to developing bespoke public infrastructure to drive public transport uptake, underpinned by the desire to create cleaner, greener, and safer cities.

The Smarter Hobart Challenge – Bus Shelter and Integrated Digital Interface Design competition was a co-design challenge, harnessing innovation to create personalised location-aware experiences integrated with appropriate weather protection and equitable access.

The successful solution by Supermanoeuvre presented an end-to-end, computational design and fabrication process using parametric design and automated manufacture, enabling shelters to be configured to each site and constructed from locally sourced sustainable materials. The approach integrates an augmented reality process meaning that a shelter can be viewed and configured on-site (through VR goggles) before being approved for manufacture.

The project is a worthy winner given its approach is sustainable, community-inclusive and technologically innovative.
