FORWARD THINKING - Housing Supply
Housing supply in South East Queensland has been a significant topic for many years, but COVID is proving to be a catalyst for a hot market. This seminar brings together two experienced speakers who discussed this topic and presented the trends and options for managing, monitoring and addressing housing supply for years to come.
Acting State Planner, Chris Aston covered a number of topics that relevant to land supply in Queensland with a focus on South East Queensland. This included:
- Population growth and its impact on land supply
- Key issues affecting land supply
- Current state of growth monitoring in SEQ
- The work of the Growth Areas Team
- Emerging trends
- New tools and processes being bought to bear, and
- the pathway for the next review of ShapingSEQ
Michael Forwood, Director of Saunders Havill, discussed his learnings from undertaking detailed land supply analysis across South East Queensland, the challenges in the timely delivery of large scale masterplans across multiple growth fronts and the impacts this has on housing types, costs and outcomes. This experience will be used to provide an analysis identifying challenges for achieving an agreed position on housing supply across South East Queensland and for a monitoring program, as well as the potential outcomes over the next 10 years, if no action is taken. Michael identifes the short and medium term challenges for housing and land supply.
About the speakers
Chris Aston is the Queensland Acting State Planner of the State’s 黑料大事 Group, Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and 黑料大事.
He is an accomplished leader with a background in statutory and strategic planning, policy development and analysis in the public and private sectors across Queensland and NSW. Chris is outcomes focussed and driven by ensuring pragmatic approaches to policy implementation and delivery. Chris is also a strong advocate that planning must demonstrate a value add when interfering in the market.
Michael Forwood MPIA is a Director of Saunders Havill Group and the manager of the Town 黑料大事 and Urban Design teams. Michael has extensive experience in the design, assessment and delivery of greenfield development across a wide number of South East Queensland growth areas, ranging from heavily fragmented small scale developments to large scale master planned estates. In recent years Michael has lead the company’s work in better understanding dwelling supply across SEQ and has undertaken detailed modelling across most of the high growth Council areas.
