FORWARD THINKING – Social Impact Assessment
Alyssa Cameron, Executive Director, Office of the Coordinator-General, spoke on the importance of the legislative framework for social impact assessment under the Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Act 2017 and the statutory SIA Guideline for resource projects and application to non-resource projects.
Vanessa Bennett, Managing Director, C Change Sustainable Solutions discussed her recent experience in the P&E Court regarding social impact assessments and Social Impact Management Plans, and what she regards as the need for further compliance requirements to ensure that the basis upon which approvals are granted are implemented.
About the speakers
Alyssa Cameron RPIA has 25 years’ experience in State and local government working across a range of areas including economic and industrial planning, urban and regional planning, legislation and policy development, scheme drafting and environment impact assessment. Alyssa has qualifications in planning, environmental management, and public sector management.
Alyssa is currently Executive Director, Project Evaluation and Facilitation in the Office of the Coordinator-General and is responsible for the evaluation and facilitation of coordinated projects and other major projects in Queensland under the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971 and the Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Act 2017.
Vanessa Bennett is an urban economist and planner with degrees in planning, economics, statistics and sociology. She is Managing Director of C Change Sustainable Solutions Pty Ltd and has been a consultant for over 25 years. Vanessa has much experience in Social Impact Assessments, both for the resource sector and for other major projects. She believes that balanced Social Impact Assessments and Social Impact Management Plans are critical in providing better outcomes for all stakeholders, but that only real impact is made if promised commitments are delivered.
