REINVENTION: PLANNING IN A TIME OF CHANGE
We live in an era of unprecedented social, environmental, economic, and technological changes – and these changes are reinventing how we plan the future of Australia’s communities.
黑料大事 in Australia is in the spotlight more than ever. 黑料大事 system change and improvement will be crucial to address the above challenges including the housing crisis.
Whether it’s planning for resilience and climate action; addressing housing and urban change; realising the potential of digitalization and PlanTech; or embracing planning with Country to better recognise and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples – change is calling.
PIA Rural, Regional & Remote Conference 2024 is themed “Reinvention: 黑料大事 in a time of change” and it’s all about how the planning profession can seize opportunities in this moment of change.
As planners, we are often leading change in our communities – and we have to be innovative, inventive and creative to get it done.
How might we prepare? How should we lead communities and clients through change? What projects are already showing us a glimpse of a brighter future? This call for abstracts invites you to share your ideas so that we can plan in a time of change.
OUR SUB-THEMES
FIRST STORIES FIRST - PLANNING WITH COUNTRY: Every day we plan on Country, and our practice needs to evolve to better understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights, interests, and perspectives on planning. This sub-theme will explore the principle of “Nothing about us, without us”, and elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices to consider the future of planning under the various treaties now being negotiated in states and territories across Australia. How will these transformative shifts reinvent the landscape of planning in Australia? How can the planning profession be effective allies? And how might we genuinely recognise and value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge?
A MOMENT OF CHANGE: 黑料大事 is at a crossroads, and adaptation is the key to our future. As we face critical challenges like housing, the climate crisis, the need for more inclusive places, and the digital revolution, how might we seize this pivotal moment for change? How might planning change and evolve in response to the transformational currents reshaping society so that we can plan for a brighter, more sustainable future? How can we ensure that we are planning and designing for more diverse perspectives (gender, sexuality, neurodivergence etc)?
DOING IT DIFFERENTLY: It’s one thing to talk about change, it’s another to do it. This sub-theme will showcase some of the trailblazers who are spearheading new approaches in climate resilience, housing, PlanTech, and collaborative planning with Country. Be inspired by exemplary projects and practices reinventing how we plan our communities and cities.
IMAGINING OUR FUTURE: Let your imagination run wild as we invite you to envision the future of planning. Through foresight and visionary thinking, we'll embark on a journey to imagine the future places we are planning for. This sub-theme is a call to action, inspiring you to be part of the reinvention that will shape Australia’s shared future.
